What a delightful history. I bought Seventeen regularly and then moved up to Cosmopolitan. Boy did I think I was getting an education. Those were the days of great magazines! Thank you and for the delicious recipe and sketches.

I have several charm bracelets that are mine. I also have one that was my grandmothers, it's pretty sparse, the only charms are her grandchildren. Another one I bought for $5 at an estate sale across the street from Katherine Hepburn's house. It is a childs souvenier from Mexico, and sterling silver and just fits around my wrist.

Buying a charm for someone who had a bracelet was always a good birthday or Christmas gift!

After reading this lovely piece, I have an ache in my heart for the era when the magazines a family subscribed to defined their politics and interests. We got two daily newspapers (morning and afternoon), and more than a half dozen magazines, including Life and National Geographic, but no Seventeen.

I remember having a charm bracelet for a time, but it and the heart-shaped locket I once wore have long since vanished.

Thanks for the memories, Vicki, and the soup recipe (and always wonderful art!). I just made minestrone soup the other day. It was quite similar, but minus the meat and plus a cheese rind.

Thanks Ruth for posting on Notes. Your meatless version is surely healthier than this one. Such a different era!

It was a great day when Teen or Seventeen magazine arrived in the mail! It must have been incredibly cool to create illustrations for a magazine you grew up reading. Lovely story and paintings.

“By the time you turned 17 you’d probably outgrown SEVENTEEN” Bingo, Vicki!

Love this walk (jog?) down Memory Lane, Vicki! Seventeen was one of my faves, right up there with Tiger Beat and its spectacular cover shots of Leif Garret and Shaun Cassidy 😆 I’ve got charm bracelets galore—my grandmother’s, my mom’s and the Pandora I’m not ashamed to say I still wear.

I also have my mother's and grandmother's. Just like everything else, jewelry goes out of style.

My Aunt Anne--actually my mom's best friend--was famous for her charm bracelet. She wore it every day even if she was just cleaning the house. It was a thick rope laden with so many charms you couldn't see the rope. She'd jingle it to entertain babies and let us try it on when we older--weighed a ton. So so glamourous. I wonder what happened to it?

Great that she got so much use out of her bracelet. Babies do like them!

My oldest sister had a charm bracelet that I was always trying on! I remember “tennis bracelets” were popular for a time in high school… & Now I have nostalgia for that “old” culture of printed mag’s & newspapers! ‘Back then I believe reporter staffs (esp. for newspapers) learned so much more from interacting face to face w/ coworkers & the public. Today, everyone seems so isolated, I wonder if writers just research & report from home instead of experiencing the camaraderie of a group effort in reporting? I’m always thinking that the good ‘ol days were better! Thank you for your writing!❤️

A woman with whom I taught (not my best friend) had a charm bracelet with the landmark buildings of NYC. (Chrysler Building, Empire State, etc). I coveted it. Also, my favorite recipe for fish came from Glamour Magazine, decades ago.

That is a clever theme for a charm bracelet!

I had a charm bracelet when I was 17! It’s in a box somewhere.

They were so popular, but also a noisy distraction to wear.
