Oh my goodness! The memories--my dad the history buff driving us up to New York one summer because he read about these spas in old copies of American Heritage book; Sunday drives to PA Amish country (just because) and the jars of preseves my mom bought--and lard, lots of lard for pies. Chow chow was the star. I had forgotten how much the family ate until all the jars were finished and another trip to Amish country was necessary!! PS: isn't there somewhere we can opurchase your art?

Thanks so much for the great feedback. My dad had a subscription for years to American Heritage. He re-read most of them in his 90s. I recently gave boxes of them to a local history teacher. I occasionally have some original art at my Etsy shop and have four pieces at a show in Tewksbury, NJ that opens early next month. You're always welcome to visit me to see if anything strikes your fancy or email me about particulars of a piece. Thank you!

We've visited many mineral springs in the West and in Canada but none on the East Coast. Many date to the late 19th or early 20th century. I enjoyed the pictures from the spa of the woman and man in dressy workout clothes! I imagine they didn't do many leg raises and splits!

I recall taking a pickling class some 10 years ago in which a corn, onion and red pepper chow chow was on the menu. I'm not sure if I can find green tomatoes here, but it does sound like there are many variations on chow chow. As usual, thanks for an enjoyable post--and the beautiful painting of Ballston Spa Lake!

What a lovely painting of Ballston Spa Lake. I'm glad you shared the photos of the spa "exercisers"--so funny to see them so dressed up, and hard to imagine much exercise was occurring in those outfits.
